New work for ‘Our Time’ at Arteria, Lancaster - Jan 2022

For Arteria’s ‘Our Time’ exhibition, I wanted to make a new and different collection of work from subjects I love but don’t often make work about. The pieces I made for ‘Our Time’ reflect my interest in the home and the handmade. Each illustration centres around a hobby or craft such as embroidery or features a handmade item like a quilt or robe.

‘The Handmade Quilt’ - I love handmade textiles and I get so much pleasure from my collection of houseplants at home.

I wanted my illustrations to show that domestic spaces can be places of wonderful creativity and self-expression - where time can be spent making and creating, and the objects we make, and sometimes the tools we use, often have stories and histories attached to them.

‘The Cherry Blossom Robe’ - whenever I’m abroad I love to visit markets for fabric, crafts and clothing which I can adapt once I’m back home.

Each illustration has been made from small drawings and meticulous papercuts composed on the page, and then carefully glued into place using tweezers and a tiny paintbrush. The materials and techniques I’ve chosen to use echo the handmade process of the crafts and hobbies featured in each artwork.
